The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005) from Telstra can be rooted without burning KNOX ( https://www.samsungknox.com/ ) if it is running baseband version N9005XXUDMJ7 using Towelroot. This can be checked under:
Settings -> General -> About device -> Baseband version
Go to this address in the browser on the phone:
https://towelroot.com/
Click the lambda (lil' A looking thing) to download tr.apk ( LOCAL MIRROR (latest as of 2014-09-14): tr.apk ) and install it. You'll need to turn on installing from unknown sources of course. Now run TowelRoot.
To verify you have root, you can install Root Verifier ( https://f-droid.org/ ) either through the f-droid store, or just downloading the APK from the F-Droid website.
Now verify KNOX is intact. To do this, turn off the phone, and hold down the "Volume down" button, the Select button, and then hold the Power button until it boots.
A "Warning!!" screen will appear. Press the "Volume up" button. A "Downloading..." screen will now appear, and at the top it will say something like:
